The Tea On Glycolic Acid

The Tea On Glycolic Acid

The world of skincare and beauty has gotten smaller and smaller with more and more internet DIYs and tips and tricks being made. But, what is true and what is false Beauty Strike is owned by a licensed esthetician and todays topic is Glycolic acid.

Intro

Hey Beauty Lovers,

Its Emani Mone the owner and head Esthetician at Beauty Strike. Numerous people have asked me about Glycolic acid recently so I wanted to make a blog post about it to shed some light on why and how you should use it especially in the winter time! A little info about me, I have eczema which makes my skin super dry so I am always moisturizing even in 90 degree weather. I started getting acne at about 9 years old and have tried everything from Proactive to Mary Kay for my skin and using targeted solutions and products like Glycolic has really transformed my skin.

So whats the tea sis? Glycolic acid is like the holy grail of skincare. Imagine working on hyper-pigmentation, scarring, signs of aging and revealing a brighter fresher skin tone all at once. Yes, sis is definitely IT.  Glycolic acid is a colorless, odorless compound that is derived from cane sugar, unripe grapes and sugar beets. Glycolic belongs to the AHA family, (alpha hydroxy acid) the molecules of Glycolic acid is the smallest in the AHA family so it penetrates VERY quickly but it is water soluble so its easily washed off.

The Chemistry

If you aren't familiar with pH here is a quick chemistry lesson. Potential of hydrogen is the measure of how acidic or alkaline a substance is. The pH scale ranges from 1, being the most acidic and 14, being the most alkaline. A pH of 7 is considered neutral and the ideal healthy pH of the skin is between 4.5-6. When it comes to all acids the lower the pH the stronger the acid and the deeper it will penetrate regardless of percentage strength.

Now, for glycolic acid to be beneficial and essentially work the pH can't be higher than 4.0. Higher would be considered neutral making it ineffective and lower would make it a peel treatment that would need to be neutralized or could basically burn our faces off! Yikes!
